How to Decorate A Small Space: 5 tips on Small Space Living

5 Tips on Small Space Living

Whilst many of us dream of having more space in our homes for storage and belongings, the reality is that our homes are getting smaller, as we move into cities and denser urban areas. Small space living can certainly have its benefits (hurrah for less cleaning!), but it also means we have to think carefully about how to make the most of the space we do have. Here are our five tips for making the most of small space living.

Small space living can certainly have its benefits (hurrah for less cleaning!), but it also means we have to think carefully about how to make the most of the space we do have.

1. Be aware of the scale of your furniture

As tempting as it might be, having a sofa as big as your living room is probably not the most sensible thing to do. If you are starting from scratch, visualize all your furniture in place prior to purchasing; use masking tape on the floor to mark the area for sofa and other bigger items, if that helps!

2. Opt for multi-functional items

A stool that also works as a side table? Perfect. Think about all your items and see if they can serve more than one purpose (a dining table that can be used as a desk and a clothing rack as a coat rack in the hallway for guests). Trestle legs can give you an additional table or desk if needed and packed away when not in use.

3. Be mindful of colours

Small space living doesn’t have to mean minimalism or an all-white home, but bear in mind that darker furniture can look “heavier” and therefore make the space seem smaller. If possible, seek lighter coloured pieces that are timeless and long-lasting.4. Keep it clutter-free

This should go without saying, but sometimes it takes an outsider to point out you might not need five mops and numerous kitchen gadgets bought on whim. Evaluate your belongings and think about whether they truly deserve the space in your home.

Brighten up those dark corners and suddenly your home feels that much bigger and brighter.

5. Bring in the light

If you don’t have all year around natural light to keep your home nice and bright, then make sure the artificial lighting you do use is in the right place. Sometimes all it takes is an additional floor or table lamp to brighten up those dark corners and suddenly your home feels that much bigger and brighter. With all these tips in place, make sure to check out our collection of products that might be suitable for your home, big or small.
